These historic travel photographs taken in China were shot throughout the country in 2004. Including: Beijing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Shanghai, Xian, Guillin and Hong Kong. These photos show living conditions in old, derelict homes on the verge of demolition. The occupants will soon join their neighbours in giant, identical, apartment blocks being built across China.

Most of the demolition work we saw was in Shanghai. Where the smog hung over the city. The old homes were on alleyways called Hutongs. One by one people were being evicted and their homes demolished. Now nearly two decades later there will be nothing left of the historic Hutongs.

At the time the Television Tower with the spheres at the top and bottom – called Oriental Pearl – was the tallest building in China.

These images and more were exhibited in the gallery at Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells.
